Big Beautiful Bill sets stage to crush Michigan healthcare jobs

When Medicaid funding is slashed, hospitals shut down and jobs are lost, especially in rural areas.

That’s exactly what Trump and my opponent, Jack Bergman, have coming for us. But I have a different plan.

We’ve already seen what happens when jobs are decimated on this level. When the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect, 200,000 high-quality, union-paying jobs were shipped to Mexico. We were told it would be good for our state.

We are still recovering over 30 years later.

Now, 1 million jobs are at risk that support our healthcare industry. And Jack Bergman voted to slash funding and risk the closure of 20% of Michigan’s rural hospitals by cutting Medicaid.

He thinks Michiganders who need hospital care are a waste of taxpayers' resources. And anyone working in that field is dispensable as long as there are permanent tax cuts for his campaign mega donors. It is clear that Jack Bergman is compromised and unable to make decisions that positively affect hard-working Michiganders.

Trump's “One Big Beautiful Bill” will rip $800,000,000,000 out of Medicaid over the next decade. That’s $800 billion.

In Michigan alone, that means $6 billion in cuts to our hospitals.

Up to 13 rural hospitals in Michigan are already at risk of closing.

In this district, Michigan’s 1st, the hospitals most at risk of closing include:

When these cuts hit, rural hospitals that are their communities' largest employers will be forced to close, which threatens entire local economies.

Imagine what happens when funding cuts force mass layoffs in a sector that was finally stabilizing our workforce.

Here's what I'm going to do about it.

Instead of austerity that destroys jobs and communities, we need to expand healthcare through universal coverage.

That means nobody falls through the cracks AND we preserve the million healthcare jobs that anchor Michigan's economy. We can create good-paying union jobs with real benefits and pensions, not the low-wage, understaffed nightmare that corporate healthcare has become.

I'm running for Congress to fight for universal healthcare because it's the only way to guarantee access to healthcare while protecting the jobs and communities that depend on a functioning healthcare system.

When we remove the profit motive and insurance company middlemen, we can invest in the workers and facilities our communities need.

We can rebuild healthcare as a public good that serves people, not shareholders. We can ensure every hospital stay is covered, every rural facility stays open, and every healthcare worker gets the pay and benefits they deserve.

We can create the kind of healthcare system that strengthens our economy instead of bankrupting families and closing desperately needed medical facilities.

But I can't do this alone. Every dollar you contribute helps us reach voters who need to understand what's coming for Michigan's healthcare jobs and economy. Every donation helps us build the grassroots power to take on the corporate interests that profit from our broken healthcare system.

Please chip in $10, $25, $50, $100, or whatever you can today. Help us fight for universal healthcare that protects jobs, serves communities, and puts people over profit.

We can build the future Michigan deserves, but only if we fight for it together.

Let’s get to work,

Wayne Stiles

Democrat for Congress
