Small Business and Economic Growth
Small businesses are the backbone of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. From the mom-and-pop shops in our small towns to the local farms and manufacturers that power our economy, small businesses provide not just jobs, but a sense of community. However, small business owners across Michigan’s 1st District are facing increasing challenges—rising costs, complex regulations, and lack of access to capital are making it harder for them to thrive.
In our district, small businesses are the heart of the local economy, and if we want to ensure long-term economic stability and growth, we need to make sure these businesses have the support they need to succeed. As a small business owner myself, I understand the challenges firsthand. From managing cash flow to navigating bureaucracy, I know how hard it can be to grow a business. That’s why I’m committed to creating an environment that nurtures small business growth while keeping our communities strong and our economy vibrant.
Here’s my plan to help small businesses in Michigan’s 1st District thrive:
-
Simplifying regulations: One of the biggest hurdles small businesses face is navigating the complex and often burdensome regulatory environment. I will work to simplify regulations, cut unnecessary red tape, and make it easier for small businesses to operate—especially in rural communities where resources are limited.
-
Access to capital and funding: Too many small businesses struggle to get the capital they need to grow. Whether it’s starting a new venture or expanding an existing one, access to affordable loans and grants is crucial. I will advocate for small business loan programs and local investment opportunities that give entrepreneurs the financial resources they need to succeed.
-
Support for local entrepreneurs: I’ll work to create business incubators and mentorship programs that help new entrepreneurs navigate the early stages of starting and growing their businesses. Workforce training programs will be key in preparing our future business owners to lead the next generation of innovation.
-
Promoting broadband access and digital tools: Many small businesses in rural areas are held back by lack of high-speed internet. I will push for increased investment in broadband infrastructure to ensure all businesses, no matter where they’re located, can take advantage of digital tools to compete in the modern economy. This will help entrepreneurs reach new customers, streamline operations, and grow their businesses.
-
Supporting sustainable growth: Small businesses are also being hit by rising costs—especially in energy and resources. I’ll work to ensure that businesses can access sustainable energy solutions that help reduce costs while also encouraging growth in clean energy sectors. Whether it’s through tax incentives or direct support, we need to ensure that businesses can thrive without compromising their sustainability or profit margins.
-
Promoting tourism and local products: Northern Michigan is a tourist destination with rich agricultural, arts, and cultural offerings. I’ll work to promote local products, farm-to-table initiatives, and tourism that supports small businesses while celebrating the unique character of our region.
Small businesses in Michigan’s 1st District are the engine of our economy, and we need to make sure they have the tools and support to grow and prosper. I’m committed to creating a strong local economy by helping small businesses navigate challenges and take advantage of opportunities. By doing so, we’ll ensure that our communities are stable, self-sustaining, and prosperous for generations to come.
