Agriculture

Agriculture is the backbone of Michigan’s 1st District—our farms and ranches are vital to the local economy, providing food, jobs, and a way of life for thousands of families. From the cherry orchards of Traverse City to the dairy farms and greenhouses across the Upper Peninsula, agriculture in this region is as diverse as it is essential. But for too long, farmers have faced an uncertain future: rising costs, changing weather patterns, trade disputes, and a shortage of workers have all made it harder to succeed.

I’m committed to ensuring that Michigan’s agriculture industry continues to thrive, both by protecting the interests of small family farms and large producers, and by investing in the future of sustainable agriculture. Our farmers are the lifeblood of this district, and they need leaders who will fight for policies that reduce their burdens and help them grow.

Here’s my plan to support agriculture in Michigan’s 1st District:

  • Protecting farm subsidies and support: I will fight to preserve farm subsidies that keep prices stable for farmers and ensure they are able to weather economic fluctuations. This includes supporting funding for crop insurance programs, disaster relief, and policies that protect farmers when they face unpredictable weather events like ice storms, floods and droughts.

  • Strengthening rural infrastructure: In Northern Michigan, farmers face the challenge of getting their products to market. I’ll push for better rural infrastructure, including upgrading roads, broadband access, and efficient transportation networks that will reduce costs and help farmers expand their reach.

  • Expanding access to labor: A major challenge for farmers in Michigan’s 1st District is finding enough workers to harvest crops, especially during peak seasons. I will support work visa programs and temporary labor programs that allow farmers to hire the help they need to get their crops in without bureaucratic hurdles.

  • Sustainable and innovative agriculture: Michigan’s agriculture must adapt to climate change. I will support sustainable farming practices, such as organic farming, water conservation, and the use of renewable energy on farms. I’ll also push for research and development of agricultural technology to help farmers increase productivity while protecting the environment.

  • Protecting Michigan’s specialty crops: From cherries to apples to blueberries, Michigan is a national leader in specialty crops. I’ll work to protect these crops from the impacts of climate change, ensure fair trade agreements that don’t undercut Michigan farmers, and fight for policies that support crop diversity and long-term sustainability.

  • Rural economic development: The agricultural sector is the foundation of rural economies in Michigan’s 1st District, and we must do more to support it. I will push for policies that bring businesses and investments into rural areas, ensuring that value-added agriculture and local food systems thrive. This means creating jobs, promoting farm-to-table initiatives, and supporting Michigan-made products.

  • Improving access to healthcare for harmers: Farmers often struggle to access affordable healthcare for themselves and their workers. I will fight to expand healthcare options for farmers and their families, ensuring they have the resources to stay healthy and continue running their operations.

Michigan’s 1st District is more than just a farming region—it’s a community built on hard work, sacrifice, and a deep connection to the land. I’m committed to ensuring that our farmers have the support, resources, and tools they need to succeed now and in the future. By strengthening agricultural policy, investing in rural infrastructure, and supporting sustainable farming practices, we can ensure that the heart of Northern Michigan continues to thrive for generations to come.
