Immigration
Michigan’s 1st District is a proud, hardworking region—home to families who’ve been here for generations, as well as communities that welcome newcomers seeking a better life. I’m committed to ensuring our immigration system works for Michigan’s families, workers, and communities while keeping our borders secure and upholding the rule of law.
I believe we must take a balanced approach to immigration—one that protects our borders and national security, but also recognizes the vital role that immigrants play in our economy and society. We need an immigration system that is fair, secure, and humane, one that provides clear pathways to citizenship for those who are willing to contribute to our communities and our country.
Here’s my approach:
-
Secure the Border: The first priority must be ensuring the safety and security of our nation. I will support strong border security measures to prevent illegal immigration and the trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people. However, security doesn’t mean shutting the door on those who want to come here legally. We need to modernize our border security with smart, technology-driven solutions that respect both the rule of law and the dignity of those seeking a better life.
-
Comprehensive Immigration Reform: We need an immigration system that works for our country and reflects our values. I support comprehensive reform that strengthens our legal immigration pathways, ensures family reunification, and provides work visas for people who come to this country to contribute—whether it’s in agriculture, manufacturing, or skilled labor. These workers are vital to industries in Northern Michigan and across the nation.
-
Pathways to Citizenship: I believe in a pathway to citizenship for individuals who have contributed to our country and followed the rules. This means DACA recipients and those who have been in the U.S. for years, working and paying taxes, should have a fair path to legal status and citizenship. Immigrants have always been a cornerstone of this country’s growth, and they should not live in fear of deportation when they’ve built lives here and contributed to their communities.
-
Ensure Fairness for Refugees and Asylum Seekers: We must maintain our moral obligation to those seeking asylum from violence and persecution. I will fight for a fair and efficient asylum process that protects our security while also ensuring that we are a safe haven for those who need it most. We must ensure that refugees have access to a fair hearing while upholding the integrity of our immigration laws.
-
Support for Local Communities: Immigrants are critical to the success of Michigan’s agricultural industry, especially in our rural areas. We must create work visa programs that allow businesses in Northern Michigan to bring in seasonal workers for industries like farming, construction, and hospitality, while ensuring these workers are treated with dignity and respect.
-
Address the Labor Shortage: The labor shortage in Northern Michigan is real, and immigrants play a crucial role in addressing that gap. I will support policies that make it easier for businesses in our district to bring in the workers they need, whether it’s in manufacturing, healthcare, or technology.
Our immigration system should reflect the needs of Michigan’s families—keeping our borders secure while welcoming those who wish to work hard and contribute to our communities. I’m committed to protecting our sovereignty, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that the United States remains a land of opportunity for those who come here seeking a better life.
